The Indian government has undertaken significant efforts such as the National Afforestation Programme (NAP), Green India Mission (GIM), and Urban Forestry schemes under Smart City missions, etc. to address environmental concerns and promote sustainable development. The Forest Department, Maharashtra Govt. has taken up a program to increase the forest cover from the current 22% to the nationally mandated 33% of Maharashtra’s land. The Forest Department often supports the Urban Local Bodies with saplings for plantations in the urban areas.
Pune and other cities have a range of plantation and greening initiatives that provide a tremendous base of knowledge, willing attitudes for greening and plantation. However, experience shows that the survival of the planted saplings is poor. Urban encroachment, weather, cattle grazing, pests can impact their survival. There is an absence of a digital platform to track, monitor & demonstrate successful plantations.
Drawing from databases related to urban morphology, land records, weather and climate, soil types, vegetation and tree census, groundwater etc., as well as agent modelling and crowd sourced information, this platform enhances manifold the synergy and efficiency of logistics, diverse knowledge bases and citizens’ and corporate volunteer efforts.
The technology platform is in the “open” domain and will help with accounting for eco-benefits e.g. Carbon sequestration, in the future.
